5 Great West Loop Restaurants for 5 Different Occasions
It seems like a restaurant is opening almost everyday in the West Loop. Then when it’s time to make a dinner reservation you can’t remember any of them! If you are looking for West Loop restaurants to fit a certain occasion – look no further. The POW! staff picks have got you covered.
You don’t get out much cause of the kids or maybe you’re a workaholic. So when you do have a time to squeeze in a date night with your sweetie, you want a tried and true place that you know has delicious food and a romantic ambiance. Look no further than Maude’s Liquor Bar. I have been here on numerous occasion in the past few months and not once did they disappoint. The wine, of course, is all from France including a wonderful Rose for those hot summer nights. Appetizer highlights include fresh Wellfleet oysters along with French classics such as steak tartare and escargot. Entrees big enough for sharing with your lover include the cassoulet and mussels. The noise level is loud enough so your intimate conversations won’t be overheard but not so loud that you can’t hear each other whisper sweet nothings like “voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?”. Oui, oui!
Cute mini-dress, check…platform sandals, check…fresh mani & pedi, check! You are ready to head out for the evening with your besties. But, where to go, where to go. Everyone knows margaritas are a girl’s best friend, so head on over to Bar Takito for a cucumber margarita and great takes on Latin favorites. Great thing it’s all shared plates cause you know how hard it is for us ladies to make a decision! Make sure to order the halibut ceviche and the pork shoulder tacos. Salud!
The parents are in town for the weekend and they are picking up the bill for dinner, but only if you hit a home run with a restaurant they will enjoy. Formento’s is an all-age crowd pleaser. Their old school Italian atmosphere with overstuffed leather booths and warm brick walls will bring your parents back to the good ol’ days of the Godfather and the true meaning of “The Family”. Order a martini with their house made bleu cheese stuffed olives to feel like Don Corleone himself. Appetizers that hit the mark for everyone include the calamari and Nonna’s meatballs. The pastas are all made in house and for the meat lover check out the Canestri with Sunday Gravy. For a brief moment you and your parents will be on the same page.
On the nights where you want a quick pre-game meal without sacrificing taste, head to West End Tavern. On Madison with all the other pre-United Center bars, West End is the most consistent with quality food and good service. Pulled chicken nachos are great to share paired with one of their many drafts on tap. Then go for the turkey burger with brie cheese even if you are more of a red meat eater. Sweet potato fries come with it and I promise you won’t be disappointed. They also offer brunch.
The Hawks are in the Stanley Cup so you and 20 of your closest friends need a place to watch the next victory, oh, and have some trophy worthy food. Pizza Parlor Bar delivers on both. With TVs scattered around the bar, dining room and even on the outdoor patio you can stay up to minute on the score while ordering a drink, stuffing your face or enjoying a warm summer night. Added bonus is seating for large parties and easy to share, wood burning oven pizzas. Some of my favorites include Abe Froman’s Fave and the Pork-Q-Pie. Don’t miss the nachos bites for a mess free version of a classic app. Great for sharing..or not.
