5 Reasons Why Boxing & Muay Thai are Amazing for Kids

Learning any martial art offers numerous benefits for children beyond just the physical aspects.  POW! GYM Chicago opened in 2001.  Owner Katalin Rodriguez Ogren added her youth program when she started having kids.  Originally POW! GYM only offered a mixed martial arts and fitness program catered to adults. In 2005, she began to envision what her youth program would include.  It was at that time that she started offering youth boxing classes.

Today, her West Loop location offers free parking and kids starting at 6 years old boxing classes. Additionally, the youth combat program offers muay thai and kickboxing, as well as fitness and strength classes.  The Muay Thai program is led by Coach Austin Lewis.  An accomplished youth martial athlete has developed a program that offers recreational practice and a competitive path.

Benefits of Boxing and Muay Thai for Kids:

  1. Discipline and Focus: Boxing and muay thai requires practice, patience, and adherence to a structured routine, which helps children develop discipline and focus. Kids learn to follow instructions and self-control.
  2. Self-Confidence: As a child attends more classes, you can see their confidence build.  They gain a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. This increased self-confidence can positively impact their interactions with peers and their overall self-image. Hitting the bags is one drill that seems. to automatically make a child feel powerful.
  3. Physical Fitness: Boxing & Muay Thai provides a comprehensive workout that enhances strength, flexibility, coordination, and endurance. It’s a fun way for children to stay active, build healthy habits, and improve their overall physical health.
  4. Respect and Etiquette: POW! GYM classes expect young students to respect their instructors, peers, and themselves. Children learn the importance of showing respect, practicing good manners, and understanding the value of teamwork, which helps in building strong social skills and positive relationships.
  5. Self-Defense Skills: While martial arts are not just about fighting, they teach practical self-defense techniques that can help kids feel more secure and empowered in potentially dangerous situations. Learning to protect themselves and handle confrontations calmly is a valuable life skill.
